In a world grappling with depression, the launch of an ultra cheap laptop for just $10 in India could set the future of computer technology. A low-cost computing device for education purposes, introduced by the Indian government earlier this week, can run the office suite from OpenOffice.org, besides offering users the ability to browse the Web, a government official said.
Known as ‘Sakshat’, the laptop is aimed to fill the gap between rich and poor by linking 18,000 colleges and 400 universities across India.
Lots of private firms were given the agreement to make the notebooks after the design specifications were finalized. Already such efforts are taken by the people before too, but not able to get such a success rate.
Many governments throughout the world tried a similar low-priced computer scheme for their State-run education system, but India’s laptop is undoubtedly the most cost-effective so far.
If the laptop plan turns out successful in India, some industry professionals are anticipating that the ‘$10 PC’ could be a hit further abroad than Asia. Rs 500 laptop or 10 dollar laptop has generated the same sort of buzz in technology circles like Rs 10000 Simputer generated a few years ago. Still people believe that its impossible to make a laptop in Rs 500. It may cost as minimum as Rs 5000. But this was the same story when Ratan Tata announced about the Nano project. So wait and watch, Indians are capable of doing this.
Indians on a role here, first the ISRO's successful moon project, Then comes the Ratan Tata's dream car Nano, Now Sakshat. Finally the Indian realised that they need to think a bit, and they can do anything what they want. After these low cost projects, Indians may look for some other projects, may challenge the Chinese market of low budget electronics goods.
Whatever may be the results further, the Giants were a bit worried about this. If this is going to be a successful project, then its sure that the PC future is re decided. Many people need to think again on their strategies.
