Maruti sees record sales in September

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL), the country’s largest car maker, expects to record its highest-ever monthly sales in September this year with a growth of 32-33 per cent over the corresponding period of the previous financial year.

MSIL Chairman R C Bhargava said: “MSIL’s growth till last month was about 27 per cent. This month, I believe it will be something between 32 and 33 per cent. September will be a record month.” MSIL reported its highest ever monthly sales of 104,791 units in August, which was an increase of 23.56 per cent over August 2009.

For this entire fiscal, we should sell about 1.2 million cars,” Bhargava said, adding the company sold about 1.02 million units in the last year.

To up capacity 10%
In order to meet the growing demand for automobiles in the domestic market, MSIL has further firmed up plans to increase capacity by 10 per cent to churn out 110,000 vehicles every month from October. This would take the company’s annual output to 1.3 million units in 2011-12.

Bhargava said: “At present, we are producing 100,000 units every month. From October, this will be further increased to produce about 108,000 to 110,000 units a month.”

With the capacity enhancement measures in place, Maruti would be producing an additional 25,000 cars every month, against the 84,000 units it was making every month last year. In 2009-10, the company sold 1.2 million vehicles.

The rapid increase in demand, however, has meant that customers have to wait longer to own a Maruti vehicle. The company continues to have waiting lists. Barring M800, A-Star and Estilo, all cars have some amount of waiting with DZiRE topping the list.

At present, MSIL, which is 54.2 per cent owned by Suzuki, has an annual capacity of 850,000 units at its Gurgaon plant, while its Manesar unit can produce 350,000 units annually, with the overall capacity totaling 1.2 million units a year.
